How We Enable Students to Become More Literate in the Digital Era 

International Literacy Day, What is It? 

Happy International Literacy Day! Today marks the 60^th annual celebration of International Literacy Day! First established by UNESCO in 1966, International Literacy Day was meant to recognize the importance and necessity of key literacy skills among societies. The holiday highlights literacy challenges, celebrates progress, and promotes basic reading and writing skills for all people. The theme this year, according to UNESCO, is highly relevant: “Promoting Literacy in the Digital Era.” 

As technology becomes further ingrained in education, it is important for us to recognize the increasing importance of preserving and improving our literacy skills. Literacy goes beyond basic reading and writing skills—it is about being able to analyze information critically and create meaning from it.  

How ISOR-PH Supports Students 

Starting at the elementary level, our students are introduced to foundational literacy concepts that are repeatedly ingrained, practiced, and built upon through coursework over the years. Our elementary level Language Arts core courses aid students in literary analysis through a mixture of online and hands-on reading materials—all provided directly to families upon enrollment. As students build upon their skills throughout elementary and middle school, our high school English courses enable students to perform close readings, make informed interpretations of nonfiction and literature, formulate arguments, and participate in discussions about readings. These literacy practices help students develop advanced communication and critical thinking skills.  

Beyond our core coursework, we also support our students through personalized lesson plans and support as needed. A major advantage of our virtual learning model is the flexibility students have in choosing their own paths in subjects they want to learn more about or need support in addressing literacy gaps. Through our accredited core classes, access to multimedia learning resources, pathways for growth and recovery, and personalized support, students are equipped with the skills they need to become literate and productive members of society upon graduation.  

What You Can Do 

While students can rely on ISOR-PH to support the development of their literacy skills in the classroom, maintaining literacy in the digital era goes beyond efforts in the classroom. We encourage our students to read, research, and carefully analyze information, not only to further educate themselves, but also to share correct information with others.  

When it comes to digital literacy, critical judgement is important as well. That means actively reading and verifying any information you see online before sharing it, taking the time to learn and utilize digital tools, and informing yourself on the types of misinformation and how they spread. Knowing how to read, write, and communicate with others helps people get better jobs, stay healthy, understand their rights, and overall improves the productiveness and prosperity of our communities. So, pick up a book, verify a social media post, analyze information, and prepare yourself for success in the digital world.
